Acupuncture in Cochrane
What it is:
Traditional Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture is an ancient medical practice which has been around for over 3,000 years. Acupuncturists view diseases and health disorders as an imbalance in the body's energy, which flows along well-defined pathways called meridians.
By inserting very thin acupuncture needles at specific points along these meridians, a well-trained acupuncturist can normalize the flow of energy and prevent or treat illness by initiating the body's own healing mechanisms.
Modern scientific study has confirmed that Acupuncture induces biochemical changes in the body that have beneficial effects and can reduce recovery times by up to 50% compared to conventional western approaches. Who benefits: Anyone can benefit from acupuncture treatments. Acupuncture/TCM can be used to treat a specific condition and it can be used in the prevention of illness.
Conditions in which acupuncture is effective in treating includes but is not limited to:
Addiction (drugs, alcohol, nicotine)
Anxiety/depression
Arthritis
Asthma
Back pain
Carpal Tunnel
Common cold
Headaches/migraines
Incontinence
Insomnia
Knee pain
Menopausal symptoms
Neck pain
Pain of any type
What to expect:
Your initial visit to the Cochrane Clinic will consist of a comprehensive health interview and examination followed by an acupuncture treatment. The examination will include inspection of the tongue, pulse analysis, and palpation. The practitioner will also review your medical history, presenting signs and symptoms, lifestyle and diet. These are all used to develop a diagnosis and determine the best treatment plan for you.
Practitioner training:
Under Alberta's Health Disciplines Act and Acupuncture Regulation, you must be registered by the Acupuncture Health Disciplines Committee to call yourself an Acupuncturist. Registered members provide services listed in the Regulation. In general, applicants for registration as Acupuncturists must successfully complete an approved program of studies (or equivalent) and have practiced acupuncture for at least 500 hours in the previous two years.
